The Plateau d'Albion

The Plateau d'Albion was selected in April 1965 as the site for installation of nuclear missiles, bolstering French defence, in addition to its nuclear submarines and strategically placed bombers.
18 silos was dug out, each one housing a missile and two buried firing points. However, the site was closed permanently in 1999. Most of the silos were walled up and abandoned. One of them was converted into a public astronomical observatory (SIRENE) and serves as a firing point in Rustrel for the low noise underground laboratory (LSBB). This laboratory benefits from the unique characteristics of low seismic, anthropogenic and electromagnetic noise, enabling many different experiments and research to be conducted there.
