The hamlet of Serres

The coat of arms of Gargas carries many symbols: towers, evoking the fort, the setting for many battles during religious wars, leading to its destruction in 1597, as well as fleur-de-lis, the emblem of French royalty.
In the middle of the coat of arms sits a gypsum crystal in a characteristic shape with an arrowhead, evoking the gypsum deposits of the Colline de Perréal. In fact, on this hill, underground gypsum quarries were mined in the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, for the production of plaster. Small ovens were crafted directly into the embankments, and the lime kiln in St-Saturnin-lès-Apt was also used to bake the gypsum at around 150°C to transform it into plaster through dehydration.
